In this new episode of The RevolutionFI Podcast, Tim introduces the segment, “Reflections on My FI Journey.”
“So, the question is this: How can 50+ folks like us, honest and hard-working, how do we manage our current responsibilities and still plan for retirement? 401ks alone won’t be enough and we don’t have 40 years to save, so how do we leverage our experience and wisdom to gain financial independence? That is the question, and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Tim, and welcome to the Revolution. The RevolutionFI podcast.”

Well, hey there, and welcome to the brand new podcast. I am Tim/J. This is technically episode number one. So I know I’ll look back on this episode and listen to it and cringe because that’s always what happens with podcasts. I thought I would start this podcast and this new journey at the beginning, taking the leap. So that’s, that’s basically what I’ve done. Those of you who are listening who came over from one of my writer email lists, are realizing now that J. Thorn and Tim Desmond are the same person. And hopefully, you’re not feeling as though that’s been manipulative or secret for any reason, other than the fact that the pen name really suited my author brand in it.
It started back in my band days and as I was, over the past few months, as I’ve been thinking about the changes and the evolution I’m going through, I realized that that the J. Thorn brand just didn’t fit now and would have been a whole lot easier to do this as J. Thorn, but it wouldn’t have been the right way to do it. And, and so that’s, that’s a little bit of the awkwardness out of the way.
The Plan for Mondays
What I wanted to do today. And I’m gonna try and do this every Monday, I’ll get to the sort of the segmentation of the podcast in a moment. But I want to tell you a little bit about sort of the journey as I’m taking it.
So I am a full time creative. And I’ve been so since 2017. But this is, this is a new direction. And I don’t have any idea where it’s gonna end up so I thought I was just sort of document it, along with you, because you might be joining me now at the very beginning stages of your journey. I went on or that it’s kind of, it’s kind of strange. I was talking to my friend Joe, today we were, and he was, we were talking about where I’ve been and where I’m going. And it kind of validated for me that I kind of have this nexus this, this moment where I can rely on Tim from all the experience teaching.
So from my master’s degree, and, and 23 years of classroom teaching, and literally 10s of thousands of students in different ways, shapes and forms. That’s sort of the foundation for RevolutionFI. But J. Thorn is just as important because J. Thorn is the real world experiment, case study, it worked, I can look back and say, here’s what I’ve done. And although your skill might not be writing, and publishing and editing, it’s certainly a skill that you can monetize.
I’ve Done It and You Can Too
And so I can show you how to do that, because I’ve done it. I’m a living example. And I’m really excited about that. I think it’s sort of, because when I started J. Thorn and left the classroom, I was in the same situation, I had no idea what was going to happen or how it was going to work. And so now that I’ve done it, and I’m loving it, I feel like I’m in a good place to help you do the same. So that’s just a little overview of where I’m going to be going with this.
Each podcast, the daily episodes will be just bite sized, short form. I know attention span is short. And all the data says that short form content is the way to go. So I know some of you like long form content. I’m a fan of that. I love James Altucher’s interviews, and Tim Ferriss interviews and Joe Rogan’s interviews, but those are outliers. And, and as far as listening behaviors go, they’re also outliers. I wanted to make this as digestible and relevant and meaningful to you as possible. I’m going to keep it lean and efficient, which is what I aim to do in my writing as well.
Let me just kind of tell you what you can expect. And this is all subject to change. This whole thing is a big experiment. So I’m going to be listening to your feedback and your messages and trying to decide how to make it better, how to improve it, how to change it and sort of serve what you need.
The Weekly Plan
But here’s where we’re going to start.
Monday segments are going to be more reflective about me talking about my journey. So as I just mentioned, I’m going to be documenting where I am in the journey and what I’m working on. Some Mondays, it’ll be more reflective sort of high level aspirational things. Other Mondays that might be really in the weeds on you know, my Kajabi site or my email list or the lead magnet I’m developing. So it’ll just depend on what I’m working on that week.
On Tuesday, I’m going to look at trends. So I’m going to look at what’s happening in small business, entrepreneurship, internet marketing, all the things that are relevant to the place where we all want to go and I’m going to curate that for you and pull it together and, and share some great takeaways.
Wednesday’s are going to be the Book of the Month Club. So this I’ll give you a little heads up this week, the Book of the Month Club will be THE ONE THING by Gary Keller, which is one of the most amazing books I’ve read in the past 10 years. So what I’m going to do on Wednesdays is I’m going to pull a quote or two from the book and sort of talk about it. And, do it in a sequential order. So that if you want to read along, and if you want to take the month to read that book, hopefully my takes my reflections will be paced along with your reading. So again, that’ll be THE ONE THING by Gary Keller.
Thursday, I’m going to look at some of my favorite blog posts for the week. So I subscribe and read to dozens of different blogs, again, I’m going to curate that information, pull it together and share with you a great highlight or a tip or something I found extremely useful.
Friday, I’m going to do the same thing for podcasts. So again, I listened to dozens of podcasts. They’re not there, they’re going to be mostly focused on again, business marketing, entrepreneurship. My writer business is certainly again the model for it, but I’m not catering to just writers. So it is not not necessarily just going to be on writers, although it certainly could come up that way. And of course, my podcast with JD and Zach Writers, Ink, might show up there at some point.
Saturday and Sunday’s episodes are going to be weekend reflections. So these are going to be things that I’ve read, heard, watched, saw, I guess that’s the same thing. But I’m going to reflect on things. So just to give you a little heads up. This week, I’m going to be on Saturday, I’m going to be revisiting one of the Daily Stoic emails that Ryan Holiday sends out. And then on Sunday, I have a blog post by Seth Godin this week that I want to talk about. So those are just a couple of examples of what we are going to show up on weekend reflections.
Let Me Hear from You
I would certainly encourage you to send me recommendations. If you have a podcast episode that struck you, certainly a blog post or an article, by all means, send that to me, because I can incorporate that kind of stuff into the episodes.
