What is the main source of blog traffic?

Episode 2: What is the main source of blog traffic?

In this new episode of The RevolutionFI Podcast, Tim wrestles with the question, “What is the main source of blog traffic?”

“So, the question is this: How can 50+ folks like us, honest and hard-working, how do we manage our current responsibilities and still plan for retirement? 401ks alone won’t be enough and we don’t have 40 years to save, so how do we leverage our experience and wisdom to gain financial independence? That is the question, and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Tim, and welcome to the Revolution. The RevolutionFI podcast.”

TRANSCRIPT:

Happy Tuesday to ya, I am psyched to be back for episode number two, at least I made it to two. That’s an accomplishment. We’re looking at trends today on Tuesday, and I have an interesting report for you from animalz.co. That’s animals with Andrew Tate, and Ryan Law analyzed 150 million pageviews, from different companies. And what they were looking at is traffic.

So this is in September of 2019, so a little over a year ago. So it’s definitely relevant. It’ll be relevant for a few years. But what they did is they grouped these blogs that they analyzed into five different categories. So you had less than 10,000, pageviews, 10, to 50,000, pageviews, 50, to 100,000, page views 100,000 to 1 million page views. And then 1 million plus page views.

Interesting Stats

Here are some of the stats that came out of their report that I think are really interesting.

All right, first, almost 60 percent of all traffic came from organic search. That is stunning. And if you think about this, think about the amount of money and investments and time that’s put into paid advertising. And yet 60% of all website traffic, or blogs in this case, is organic. It’s the highest growth channel, its growth rate is increasing by 9% every month.

So organic search is the primary way people are finding what they’re looking for. This might be a little disappointing 80% of all blog traffic is generated by 16% of blogs. I’m kind of surprised it’s not higher. But you know, that’s, that’s the case. Also, it takes a meaning of nine years to reach 1 million monthly pageviews.

So blogging is certainly a long play game. It’s got a long tail, right? Time spent, people spend about three minutes and 15 seconds on average on a page. And the bounce rate is at point three 3%. So a couple of recommendations that the team and animals suggested is if you’re looking for traffic on your blog, or your site, focus on organic search. Interesting, right? Not Facebook ads, not Google AdWords, but organic search.

Teaching is the Best Source of Organic Traffic

They also came to the conclusion that if you’re teaching something, again, again, no surprise to me here at, RevolutionFI. If you’re teaching something that is the best source of organic traffic, so if you create a blog post, that is a recipe or a step by step that is going to get you the most amount of traffic. So what’s the takeaway from this, I mean, obviously, we’re a little bit here in the weeds on the analytics. And you might not be that far along. You might not even have a blog.

But here’s my takeaway on it. You are much better investing in your own unique content, and make it good enough that people want to share it, or that people click on it when they search for it, then you are spending money on ads. And that ad money and time once it’s spent is gone. Whereas every time you create a piece of content, it is yet another way for you to get your message across or for someone to find you. So I think this report is extremely encouraging.

Again, it’s not a hack, you know, it’s not something that you’re going to come up with overnight. But by all means if you have something to teach, even if it’s something simple. If you can create a post or a webpage that shows someone how to do it, that is the best way to get organic traffic and engagement and that will clearly generate word of mouth.

So excellent, excellent report by Tate and Law at Animalz.co. And thank you guys for doing that.
